Introduction
DASA will issue Military Type Certificates (MTCs) for all products (aircraft, engine or propeller) on the Defence register except for Open or Specific category Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS). A sovereign MTC gives Defence control of the type design of the aircraft it operates and enables capability decisions unaffected by foreign militaries, OEMs or civil Type Certificate holders. Engines and propellers fitted to Defence aircraft will not be issued a separate MTC, but instead their designs certified under the MTC for the product to which they are fitted.
A Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) will accompany the MTC. The TCDS contains all information (or reference thereto) about the certification of the product including the type certification basis (TCB), operating limitations, the aircraft flight manual (AFM), instructions for continuing airworthiness (ICA), airworthiness limitations (AwLs), certification maintenance requirements (CMRs), critical parts list (if applicable) and any other data necessary for the continued safe operation of the product.
Australian Military Type Certificates (AMTCs), Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) and design approvals issued prior to 30 Sep 16 remain valid unless they are replaced by a DASR equivalent or withdrawn.
What We Do
DASA will issue MTCs based on satisfactory evidence that the design of a product complies with the product’s type certification basis (TCB), including all the data required for the TCDS.
DASA will also provide oversight over the applicant to assure its demonstration of capability in applying for the MTC prior to issuance.
How Do I Apply?
Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) acquisition project offices do not need to submit an application to DASA for an MTC. Applicants are expected to engage early in the acquisition process with DASA, to establish a certification programme. Following this program and its requirements negates the need for a standalone application.
The project office applying for an MTC must demonstrate its organisational capability by entering into agreements with supporting design organisations whereby the project office, in partnership with its supporting organisations, can collectively meet the requirements of DASR 21 Subpart J.
