Introduction
Role equipment is any equipment that is carried, and required to be operated, on an aircraft and is not installed aircraft components or cargo. Aircraft airworthiness may be compromised if role equipment is not compatible with aircraft systems, which may impact crew, passenger and equipment operator safety. Consequently, role equipment must be subjected to formal approval processes, including technical evaluations, to ensure that it will perform its intended function without adversely affecting the aircraft or itself being affected by the aircraft and associated operating environment.
Portable Electronic Equipment (PEE) have potential to interfere with sensitive aircraft electronic systems and equipment if not managed appropriately. In general, PEE are not manufactured or regulated with the intention of operations in the electromagnetic environment of aircraft and, therefore, are not subject to the same stringent compliance requirements as avionics or other aircraft systems. Although the intentional emissions from PEE are comparatively low and unintentional emissions are even lower, interference with sensitive aircraft systems may still occur. Consequently, prior to approval for use, PEE must be evaluated to establish whether they can be safely operated on board Defence aircraft.
What We Do
DASA prescribes airworthiness design requirements for role equipment and PEE in the Defence Aviation Safety Design Requirements Manual. DASA also prescribes the requirements for approval of role equipment and PEE in DASR ORO.75 Use of Aircraft Role Equipment and DASR ORO.65 Carriage and Use of Portable Electronic Equipment respectively.
