What We Do

The section fulfils two main (yet entirely separate) roles related to structures and aero-mechanical systems for all Defence rotary-wing aircraft in support of the wider Defence aviation community:

1.    Conduct independent Authority assurance functions in support of Initial, Continued and Continuing Airworthiness activities:

  • Prescribe and interpret relevant elements of policy, regulation, design standards and requirements (and promotion thereof)
  • Provide technology specialist safety assurance services internal to DASA (for products, processes, oversight and enforcement);
  • Analysis and inspection of Compliance Demonstration Evidence;
  • Provision or in support of Authority authorisations and products; and
  • Review of reportable occurrences and management thereof, including the issue of Airworthiness Directives (if required).

2.    In capacity as a Defence Centre of Expertise (CoE); Assist the Aviation Safety Community by supporting Commanders in their requirement to ensure structurally-airworthy platforms:

  • Provide specialist technical analysis and advice;
  • Where appropriate and when agreed, task coordination and management of Structural Integrity activities on behalf of the Defence Aviation Safety Community.

Training

HSI provides a range of training to the Defence Aviation Safety Community. This includes short awareness training packages (that can be tailored to suit the participant), and the in-depth Helicopter Structural Engineering Familiarisation (HSEF) Course.

Helicopter Structural Engineering Familiarisation Course (HSEF)

The HSEF Course provides a synopsis of Aircraft Structural Integrity (ASI) management in Defence while tailoring for Rotary Wing Platforms. This course is primarily suited to ASI Program (ASIP) managers, Defence personnel, Industry SI engineers, or airframe/structures engineers involved in SI management. This course compliments other DASA courses, further equipping participants with a deeper understanding of helicopter structural design principles, methods and stakeholder responsibilities to describe how ASIPs enhance aircraft safety.

Further information related to HSEF and its intended audience is available within the HSEF Course Information Sheet on the DASA Training Courses internet site.
