What We Do

The ASI Section within DAVENG fulfils two main (yet entirely separate) roles:

  • Conduct Authority functions, related to aircraft structures and aero-mechanical systems for ADF fixed-wing aircraft, to support DASA’s independent assurance of Initial and Continuing Airworthiness:
    • prescribe and interpret relevant elements of policy, regulation, design standards and requirements (and promotion thereof)
    • provide technology specialist safety assurance services internal to DASA (for products and processes, and oversight and enforcement)
    • undertake inspection of compliance demonstration evidence
    • conduct Authority approvals, and where appropriate, issue airworthiness instruments
    • conduct independent safety assurance of reportable occurrences in response to occurrence reporting, including the issue of Airworthiness Directives (if required).
  • Assist regulated entities (CASG SPOs/MTCHOs, CAMOs and contracted support providers), in the capacity as a Defence CoE, to support Commanders ensure structurally-airworthy platforms:
    • provide Aircraft Structural Integrity (ASI) services
      • CoE assessments and specialist technical advice
      • where appropriate and when agreed, task coordination and management of major ASI issues on behalf of CASG
    • execute strategy and govern the Sovereign Structural Integrity Capability (SSIC) sponsored by DAVENG (between DAVENG, QinetiQ and DSTG).

ADF ASI Symposium

As circumstances permit, ASI Section will coordinate the ADF ASI Symposium.
The ADF Aircraft Structural Integrity Symposium (AASIS) is the only dedicated forum for military Aircraft Structural Integrity in Australasia. The theme varies from year-to-year with the next one being:

  • 2024 AASIS -Discussing Issues, Improvements, and Changes in the Aircraft Structural Integrity Environment

The Symposium is targeted at all personnel involved in the acquisition and in-service management of ADF aircraft systems, as well as interested representatives from foreign military forces, science and technology organisations, research and development centres, commercial aviation organisations, airworthiness regulators and academia.

Registration for the ADF ASI Symposium is free. The cost of travel, accommodation, and incidentals are the responsibility of the delegate's organisation.

Details of future ADF ASI Symposiums will be published on this website under Events.

ASI Familiarisation Course

Aircraft Structural Integrity (ASI) Familiarisation Course provides a synopsis of ASI management in Defence. This course is primarily suited to Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) managers, Defence personnel, Industry SI engineers, or airframe/structures engineers involved in SI management. The course is designed to highlight the importance of effective structural integrity management with case studies and group collaboration to engage students in the content. This course is intended to complement other Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR) courses by providing specific information for how ASIPs enhance aircraft safety.

Further information on the course is available on this website under under Education and Promotion.
